What are the Great 50 Days?

The Easter Season, also known as the Great Fifty Days, begins at sunset Easter Eve and continues through the Day of Pentecost. It is the most joyous and celebratory season of the Christian year. It focuses on Christ’s resurrection and ascension and on the givings of the Holy Spirit on the first Easter and the Day of Pentecost.

The Great 50 Day Challenge

For the next 50 days, we have put together the following opportunities to serve in our community. Join us in celebrating this season by giving back in one or more of the ways below.

Help us make disciples of Jesus Christ.

Learn More

If you know someone that you think is interested in joining our church family or learning more about the church please submit their name and contact information so that someone from our clergy team can reach out to them. Feel free to include any additional notes that it would be helpful for us to know as we reach out to them.

Remind someone that they’re not forgotten.

Learn More

Hebrews 13:2-3 says, “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it. Remember those who are in prison, as though you were in prison with them;” If you are interested in taking up this charge and remembering and writing to someone in prison, all you have to do is send them a note to let them know that they are loved and not forgotten. If you need a little help to get you started, we are sending a sample letter to our volunteers. We will provide you with the name and address of someone to send a note to. Please let us know if you need stationery.

Devote time to God each day.

Learn More

Thanks to the Prayer Ministry team and Sacred Arts Committee, we have compiled a prayer booklet with daily devotions, reflecting on coordinating bible verses, each day having been paired with artwork from within our congregation and community. A copy will be mailed to you if you are already receiving the worship bulletin by mail. If not, we invite you to pick up a copy of the book. Additionally, the daily devotion and art will be emailed out throughout the Great 50 Days. Let’s pray and reflect together on Jesus’ Resurrection and Ascension.

Say hello to a new neighbor.

Learn More

You will be delivering a welcome bag to someone new to the neighborhood. You can either receive the name and address of someone new to the church neighborhood, or you can pick up a packet to deliver to a new neighbor that you know or want to get to know. You can deliver the welcome bag any day/time that is convenient to you between the hours of 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM. You don’t need to stay long; this is just a quick hello to let them know that we at FUMC are glad they are here. If they aren’t home, then you can leave the bag at their door. More information about your welcome bag pick-up time will be forthcoming.

Become trained for Emergency Response.

Learn More

UMCOR’s Early Response Training is conducted in local churches to prepare people to respond to help others suffering from damage in a hurricane, tornado, or other disasters. The training in our area is conducted by John Swanson who also serves as our district disaster coordinator.  This training is approximately 6 hours and is conducted in a one-day session. The certificate you receive upon “graduation” is good for three years.  We have a handful of ERTs in the church already and are looking to expand this program. We are also looking for team leaders who would form a team of six to eight people that could work together and be dispatched at the next opportunity to help those in need.  Contact Claire Smith to sign up as a team leader or to enroll in the next ERT class.

Help rehab a home for someone in need.

Learn More

Habitat has two clients they are working with to qualify for a house. Our own Scott Gregory, Habitat Executive Director, is excited to have us partner with them. We plan to determine your interest in volunteering to help these applicants become homeowners in a home that we will help rehab rather than build brand-new. Please contact Claire Smith if you would like to participate in this rewarding project in the coming months.

Bring joy to a local veteran.

Learn More

If you’ve ever wanted to show your appreciation for and form a bond with a brave Veteran, now is your chance. No specific number of letters needs to be written; our goal is for 50 people to sign up to write. We will assign you the name(s) and address(es) upon signup. Please let us know if you need stationery. We will even provide a sample letter if you need help finding the right words. This is a wonderful demonstration of our commitment to reach out to those who have served our country, and we thank you in advance for showing your support.

Show love to those who are homebound.

Learn More

If you are interested in writing a letter to one of our homebound members, this is your chance. These letters are great reminders to our FUMC family members that they are loved and not forgotten. We will provide you with the name and address of someone to send a note to. Please let us know if you need stationery.

Share what your dreams for ministry are at FUMC.

Learn More

We want to know what your dreams for ministry are at FUMC. You don’t have to have the full plan; just share with us what is tugging on your heart that you would like the church to begin thinking about. Please email your dreams for the church to us at dreams@fumcmontgomery.org or click the button below.

Hand a pick-me-up to a college student during finals.

Learn More

We will be handing out Starbucks gift cards as a small way to say, “We are your neighbors; we care about you; we want to support you during your finals season.” We will meet at 12:00 PM on April 14 and May 13 at the South Parking Lot of FUMC by Fellowship Hall before going to the ASU and Huntingdon campuses to hand out $5 Starbucks gift cards for students preparing for finals. The time commitment for either day is one hour.

Support women who need support after being released from prison.

Learn More

Every month, approximately 50 women leave Alabama’s prisons with little or no resources and/or family support. Aid to Inmate Mothers provides services that assist in creating positive lifestyle changes for these women. For this project, pick up an empty white shoebox from the church breezeway from Sunday, April 11 to Wednesday, April 14. You will then fill the box with items such as a devotional book or Bible, note(s) of encouragement, full-size toiletry items, hair products and accessories, small clothing items, a small tote, purse or backpack, nail polish, make-up, and other personal care items.  A complete list of ideas and specifications will be enclosed in the empty boxes. Please eturn the completed box to the church breezeway from Sunday, April 25 to Wednesday, April 28.

Handmake items to serve those in need.

Learn More

In Stitches: Creative Fellowship is a wonderful small group part of our 50 PLUS Ministries. This group of fierce knitters, crocheters, cross-stitchers, and beyond created dozens of masks for frontline workers during the pandemic. Please join us in knitting or crocheting prayer shawls, baby blankets, and newborn caps during the Great 50 Days. The baby items will go to the Gift of Life Foundation, and the prayer shawls will go to the Prayer Shawl Ministry. All skill levels and all ages are welcome. We will provide instructional videos and patterns at fumcmontgomery.org/InStitches, and we will even have weekly in-person meetings on Mondays at 10:00 AM outside. At the end of the Great 50 Days, we will have a Blessing Party to pray over all items before they go to their destinations. Click below to participate, and we will be in touch.
