What are the Great 50 Days?

April 17 – June 5, 2022

The Easter Season, also known as the Great Fifty Days, begins on Easter and continues through the Day of Pentecost. It is the most joyous and celebratory season of the Christian year. It focuses on Christ’s resurrection and ascension and on the givings of the Holy Spirit on the first Easter and the Day of Pentecost.

The Great 50 Day Challenge

For the next 50 days, we have put together the following opportunities to serve in our community. Join us in celebrating this season by giving back in one or more of the ways below.

Help us make disciples of Jesus Christ.

Learn More

If you know someone that you think is interested in joining our church family or learning more about the church, please submit their name and contact information so that someone from our clergy team can reach out to them. Feel free to include any additional notes that i would be helpful for us to know as we reach out to them.

Devote time to God each day through scripture.

Learn More

When you take the time to read a whole book of scripture from beginning to end, you allow God to teach you new things and help you to better understand the Gospel story. For these Great 50 Days, we encourage you to commit to reading a chapter a day from Luke and John. You may even want to find a friend to discuss what you are learning on the journey and hold you accountable for doing your daily reading. Together, there are 46 chapters of Luke and John, so that gives you 4 days of wiggle room if you miss a day.

Provide resources for children to express themselves through art.

Learn More

Let Your Light Shine! Join us in supporting King’s Canvas by helping us provide art kits and art lessons to students from under-resourced communities in the Montgomery area. Through art and creativity, individual lives can change for the better.

Give comfort to children.

Learn More

The trauma of a child being sexually or physically abused is more than any child deserves. Child Protect exists to minimize that trauma and help rebuild young lives shattered by child abuse. The Child Protect Children’s Advocacy Center offers a non-threatening environment where a multidisciplinary team works together to minimize any further trauma during the justice and restoration process.

During the 50 Great Days, the Youth Department will collect 50 Teddy Bears or other stuffed animals to send to Child Protect. When a child walks in the front doors of Child Protect, they are greeted with a huge wall of stuffed animals. The children coming to Child Protect did not get a choice in whatever horrible act that led them to Child Protect, but picking out a stuffed animal reminds them that their choices do matter.

Run to support FUMC missions.

Learn More

Each year, FUMC hosts a run beginning in Cloverdale Park to support youth and adult missions. Races include a 5k, 1 mile, and tot trot. The event will conclude with a pancake breakfast in the park.

Remind someone that they’re not forgotten.

Learn More

Hebrews 13:2-3 says, “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it. Remember those who are in prison, as though you were in prison with them;” If you are interested in taking up this charge and remembering and writing to someone in prison, all you have to do is send them a note to let them know that they are loved and not forgotten. If you need a little help to get you started, we will send a sample letter to our volunteers. We will provide you with the name and address of someone to send a note to. Please let us know if you need stationery.

Let’s fill the Sanctuary on Sunday mornings.

Learn More

You are challenged to commit to being in worship during these Great 50 Days! From two days to four days, your presence in worship is meaningful. We won’t be whole without YOU!

Support women recently released from prison.

Learn More

Every month, approximately 50 women leave Alabama’s prisons with little or no resources and/or family support. Aid to Inmate Mothers provides services that assist in creating positive lifestyle changes for these women. For this challenge, we are filling shoeboxes to give women as they transition to a brighter future. Pick up an empty white shoebox in the Children’s Building welcome area and fill the box with items such as a devotional book or Bible, note(s) of encouragement, full-size toiletry items, hair products and accessories, small clothing items, a small tote, purse or backpack, nail polish, make-up, and other personal care items. Please return your filled shoebox by Sunday, May 15. A complete list of ideas and specifications is enclosed in the empty boxes.

Help rehab a home.

Learn More

FUMC has committed to helping Habitat for Humanity rehab a previously-built Habitat home for a new family. Give your time during these Great 50 Days by volunteering with us on this fulfilling project.
